18 Distinctive Qualities of a Buddha

Eighteen Distinctive Qualities of a Buddha (十八不共) are the qualities that only Buddhas and bodhisattvas possess. They commonly consist of the Ten Powers, Four Fearlessness, Three Kinds of Tranquility, and a Great Compassion.

Also known as Eighteen Unshared Features Eighteen Unshared Properties, or Eighteen Buddha Attributes, the 18 properties that only Buddhas and bodhisattvas possess, and that voice-hearers and cause-awakened ones do not share are:

#1 – Perfection in the action of the body

# 2 – Perfection in the action of the mouth

#3 – Perfection in the action of the mind

#4 – Fairness and impartiality

#5 – Constant concentration of the mind

#6 – Insight into all phenomena with no attachment to them

#7 – Persistent intention of salvation to all living beings

#8 – Incessant diligence

#9 – Consistency of teachings with other Buddhas

#10 – Perfect wisdom

#11 – Perfect emancipation

#12 – Perfect insight

#13 – Consistency of actions and deeds with wisdom

#14 – Consistency of words with wisdom

#15 – Consistency of mind and thought with wisdom

#16 – Knowledge of the past

#17 – Knowledge of the future

#18 – Knowledge of the present
